 Double Face

Arthur Hailey, a famous writer, really had a legendary life which helped him write great works. Like many of his other books, THE MONEYCHANGERS portrayed many interesting persons. They all attract me a lot. For some examples, Ben Rosselli’s calmness when he knew he was dying; Juanita’s persistence when facing the inequitable accusation; Wainwright’s justice to everyone. What impresses me the most is the people with double face.

Alex Vandervoort was the man that I think with double face. In most people’s eyes, Alex was a good man in some way. He was gentle, seemingly care for his wife, and didn’t like Roscoe, arranging for getting the president’s seat very early. But that’s not the true Alex. Actually Alex himself was an ambivalent person. From the chapter nine, we can find something. Alex’s wife, Celia, was a gorgeous but abnormal woman. As a good husband, Alex would go to see her sometimes. But the fact is, he not only did not make his wife feel better, but also led her to a worse condition. I think that’s the reason why the doctor once told him not to come. ‘The last time we talked you said you didn’t want me to.’ When he got to the hospital, at first he felt very pity of his wife and talked with her. He talked much about their marriage life and his love to her. He said he went to see Coppelia ,one of Celia’s favorite ballets. But he mentioned nothing of he went with Marget, his present mistress. He had no shame when he expressed his love to his wife while he was with another woman. To him, he just wanted to show others and himself that he was a good husband and he had done the best he would do. When he found his wife was getting worse and acted abnormal, he finally got angry and hated his wife.  ‘He hated her! She wasn’t human any more ,yet she remained the barrier between himself and a full life.’ He was waiting , waiting for his wife’s death. That’s the only way that could bring him both good reputation and normal life. What a hypocritical man! Then let’s find the reason why Celia became abnormal. Celia was a quiet and shy girl. Not like her husband, she was not good at making friends with others and sociality. His husband became feeling annoyed of her, because she couldn’t help his business. Sarcastically, shyness was one of characters he once loved of his wife. He never understood his wife, from the first day they met, it’s a serious mistake. Only the powerful woman as Margot could have the happy ending with him. As their marriage going on, their gap became wider and Celia felt lonelier. When one person only can facing plants everyday and can not get enough love, he become mad. And Celia was the person. Alex was a smart person, he also knew the reason, and sometimes he might blame himself. But in his heart, he never thought it’s all his fault. If he did, he would love his wife and company his wife more. He was the man only with words. Poor Celia, she loved and understand Alex all the same. He was the only thing she wanted to know of the outside world. Alex’s double face decided that he would not wait for his wife long. He began to calculate how many years it would take before his wife dies. As soon as he found it could really be a long one, he decided to drop his double face; he decided to marry with Margot. ‘And I’d like to marry her soon.’ Maybe Edwina knew his double face, as Margot’s cousin, she responded ‘then I hope you will’. Actually Alex was not a traditional good man and husband, but he was affected by this traditional idea, that’s why he had double face.

Compared to Alex, Miles Eastin’s double face was more visible. He also was a good man in the bank if he was not caught of stealing money. Miles was handsome, and good appearance always gives people good impression. Before the FBI officers noticed his economic difficulties, nobody ever suspected him. On this point, as a thief, he was successfully. Frankly speaking, I think he was a good guy. First, he was really good at his work. Edwina could prove this. He was young and energetic; he was friendly to others and also was the last one that left the bank (let alone his intension to steal money). His fellows all liked him and his boss trusted him. When Edwina found Juanita was innocent, she suspected Tottenhoe rather than him. He was a promising lad. But for his financial problems, he could have a bright future. In his heart, he was gentle and kind. So when Wainwright broke into his room, he was totally scared, and like a little boy making mistakes, he told everything without much threat. He knew that Wainwright’s breaking in was illegal, but he fight a little or we can say he didn’t fight. Wainwright actually knew little thing, it’s Miles himself told everything. As a thief, he was a fool. Maybe I have contradiction in my opinion of thief Miles. That’s because I believe Miles’s intelligence and folly is his double face. His attempt to thrust blame was his dark side, because he didn’t want to go to the prison. When a person does something wrong, he always don’t want it to be knew by others, that’s human nature. His fear and confession was his bright side, he knew it was wrong and he would take the consequence. That’s why he said and appealed nothing in the court. That’s why even people have found he was the theft, they couldn’t believe it. ‘The signature was Eastin’s –young Miles whom she liked so well, who was so efficient as assistant operations officer, so helpful and tireless, even tonight, and who only this week she had decided to promote when Tottenhoe retired. ’ That’s why many people feel pity of him. If Alex was a successful double face, well then Miles paid too much to his double face.

Every writer wants to show something through their books and characters; it’s the same with Arthur Hailey.  THE MONEYCHANGERS was first published in 1975. The USA in the first period of 1970’s had great changes. Firstly, American had difficulty of economic. Inflation and oil panic made people believe that keeping money in the bank was meaningless. Because the money will lose it’s value. Then people invented the credit cards. In this book also mentioned the credit cards’ problem. Secondly, social life also had it’s crisis. The crime rate and the rate of divorce became higher. I guess that’s because people was short of money and even one person worked very hard he could only earn little, so people became disappointed and indulged their life. These all can be seen from the book. ‘Because when money systems break down, as is happening now, it’s always the poor who suffered most.’ When we know all of this, it’s easy for us to guess the ending of this novel, nobody would escape from this finance crisis and no corporation was sure that it would not affected by it.  Arthur had told us that this bank would not escape either. ‘A few of the big ones will go under,  too –those with too many millions locked into big industrial loans; with too high a proportion of international deposits-hot money which can vanish overnight; with too little liquidity when scared depositors want cash. That’s also the reason why Alex and Miles have double face. They were educated by traditional sense of worth, but they lived in a different world, so their senses of worth had changed. Especially at that time, divorces became legal and people would pay nothing for their divorces. When divorce became easy, the rate of divorce increased. In this background, Alex felt it was easy to divorce but he was also controlled by traditional concept. Then he had double face. As for Miles, he was the victim of economic depression, like many other young people in the USA. That’s a sad period in the history and also showed some rules of capitalist country’s economy.

THE MONEYCHANGER is a great book, not only because its plot is attracting but also it lets us know about America history and it helps us to think over the rules in this world. That’s why we invent books; that’s why we need books.
