----A book report on The Return of the Native

The Return of the Native, written by Thomas Hardy is about a really sad loving story. Thomas Hardy, who born in the south of England had quit school when he was only 16. He wrote in the part time at first. Because of his experience of living in the rural areas, Hardy wrote about country life and people most. And most of his stories are tragedies. The reason for it is that he had an idea of fatalism.

This novel is consisted of a list of misunderstanding. At the beginning of the story, Thomasin failed to marry with Wildeve, for the problem of some documents. Though Wildeve still wanted to marry with Thomasin, but his meet with Eustacia was seen and knew by Diggory and Mrs. Yeobright. Then people thought that Wildeve didn’t want to marry with Thomasin and it baffled the marriage between them. Also it aroused Wildeve’s love to Eustacia again. Though Wildeve and Thomasin finally got married, their love changed. This is the first misunderstanding in the novel.

The second misunderstanding is the problem of the money that Mrs.Yeobright wanted to gave to her son and cousin. Wildeve got the money by trick to repay Mrs.Yeobright’s mistrust. Then Diggory got the money by the same trick and gave them all to Thomasin. When Mrs.Yeobright found his son didn’t got the money she believed that Wildeve gave the money to Eustacia because she didn’t know the whole thing. And it also led Eustacia to misunderstand Mrs.Yeobright. They’re relationship were completely ruined.

The misunderstanding was still going. When Clym had the problem of his eyes and took a job as furze cutter, Eustacia was very unhappy and decided to take part in a dance where she met Wildeve by accident. Their going home together was seen by Diggory again. And Diggory had a talk with Mrs.Yeobright, which led her to make up her mind to call her son and daughter-in–law and try to restore their good relationship.

But she was closed outside the house and knew her children were in the house. Then she was rather upset because she thought she was not welcomed by them. The fact was that Clym was too tired and had a sound sleep though Eustacia thought he woke up and opened the door. Eustacia didn’t want to open the door by herself because the second misunderstanding let her believe that she had a bad relationship with her mother-in-law. What was worse, Mrs.Yeobright was too upset and too tired because of this trip and she was beat by the snake on the way back home. Then she died with a big misunderstanding.

Things were not all over yet. Clym finally knew his mother’s call to his house and his wife stayed with another man at that time. So of course he thought his wife was dating with another guy and led his mother’s death. But all of us and Eustacia knew that it’s just an accident. Wildeve happened to call at the same time. Eustacia was very angry and decided to leave the house. This biggest misunderstand led to Eustacia’s death.

Then another misunderstanding saw Eustacia’s death. Eustacia was looking forward to her husband’s letter to persuade her to go home while Clym was looking forward to his wife’s call. Finally Clym decided to write first but it was too late. Eustacia was so disappointed that she decided to go away. Wildeve was glad to help and lend money to Eustacia. But he was not sure whether he could go with Eustacia because the latter one didn’t like so. Their action were still seen as elopement whereas.

The whole story is really a sad one. Nobody made any mistake, but they all fooled by the destiny. This is a good book worth reading. It discusses the fate and humanity. Readers will think a lot after finish it and know more about our life.
